The classroom in which God teaches contentment is the varied circumstances of life.
It's not when life is easy, all is well, the birds are singing and there are happy endings that one learns contentment. Contentment is learned in the ups and downs of life. It's learned as we take these circumstances gratefully from the hand of God!
Caregiving is a venue made for learning contentment because of it's ups and downs!
What Paul says...
"I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.
I know how to get along with humble means,
and I also know how to live in prosperity;
in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret
of being filled and going hungry,
both of having abundance and suffering need."
Philippians 4:11-12
He learned contentment in any and every circumstance! Wow!
What is the secret of contentment, Paul? How did you learn such a thing? The next verse:
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13
God will give the strength to bear either ups or downs! After all, we need strength for both.
Isn't this wonderful? I can take my life's circumstances today and accept them joyfully from the hand of God and be content because God strengthens me to do so. What a great God! What a fabulous lesson.
Right now I'm learning contentment caring for mumsy as she gets closer and closer to glory...
Being with my best friend and husband.
Not being able to be with my best friend and husband.
Refreshment.
Exhaustion.
Happiness.
Loneliness.
Wisdom.
No wisdom.
Support.
No support.
Joy.
Grief.
You could make your own list of the varying circumstances in your life! (I urge you to!) It's in those ups and downs of life in which God is teaching you contentment. I'm grateful.
I'm learning contentment today, what about you?
